Project Description
Station Road, Raheny is a landmark residential development delivering 105 apartments across a single building of four to seven storeys. Set on a constrained urban infill site, the building features extensive outdoor amenity via balconies and terraces on all elevations, contributing to natural light and ventilation.
Arc Engineering was appointed to design, manufacture, and deliver a comprehensive steel balcony package of both cantilevered and supported balconies including bespoke architectural solar shading and privacy screens—all offsite manufactured.
Design Considerations & Balcony Typologies
A major design challenge was the variation in façade build-up depths due to the use of multiple cladding materials—brick, render, and zinc—requiring careful alignment and structural adaptation for each balcony.
Balcony types included:
- Cantilevered and Supported Units – both single and double-width
- Corner Balconies
- Saw Tooth Balconies with bespoke solar shading fins
- Concrete Balcony balustrading
- Privacy Screened Balconies – for enhanced resident comfort and visual separation
- Ground Floor and Terrace Balustrades
- Metal and Glass Canopies – offering visual continuity and weather protection
A signature element of the scheme was the inclusion of Saw Tooth balconies on the north elevation, designed to house four vertical stacks of bespoke solar shading—creating an architectural rhythm while mitigating glare and enhancing privacy.
The balconies varied not only in structure but also in alignment—some were set out based on façade geometry while others had to align with internal window mullions, demanding precise design coordination and 3D BIM modelling.
